Species Facing Extinction
How Can I Help?

Here are some simple steps that you can take to help reduce the pressure of extinction

  1. Do Not Purchase anything made out of ivory, coral, cat pelts, reptile skins or tortoise shells. As long as there is a market for such items, endangered animals and plants will continue to be killed. besides, interstate commerce (such as on Ebay) of endangered species is ILLEGAL.

  2. Learn as much as you can about endangerd species in your own area. Don't pick any plants that need protection.
  3. Support organizations such as World Wildlife Fund and National Audubon Society. Please go to our Important Links to learn of more. These organizations are working very hard to help protect endangered species and their habitats.
  4. Adopt an Animal Many zoos are trying to provide safe homes for endangered species that mimic their natural habitats. In these setting, some types of rare animals have been able to raise offspring. For example, on August 21, 1999, a baby Giant Panda was born at the San Diego Zoo. There are only 1,200 Giant Pandas remaining in the wilds of southwest China, so this is very encouraging! By adopting an animal, you can help defray the expenses of caring for it.
