Safety Tips for using Chemicals

  1. Do NOT mix products (unless it specifies that this is necessary on the label directions).

  2. Avoid aerosol products. Don't forget: aerosol cans can explode if exposed to heat.
  3. Look for alternatives that can do the same job. There may be a more natural and less hazardous choice.
  4. Read labels. Do not buy products that neglect to list their ingredients. Be careful of products described as being caustic, flammable, explosive, radioactive, corrosive or toxic.
  5. Always use these products in well-ventilated areas if working outdoors is not possible.
  6. Avoid exposure to chemicals as much as possible especially if pregnant.
  7. Buy products that are the least hazardous: WARNING or CAUTION are less toxic. POISON is highly toxic. DANGER can mean highly toxic, very flammable or corrosive. The word "nontoxic" is not federally regulated. Products with this label could still be harmful.
  8. NEVER eat, drink or SMOKE while working with these products.

  9. Use protective safety equipment such as heavy gloves, masks, goggles, face shields, etc.
  10. Know how to extinguish flammable materials. Know where these materials are located and keep a functioning fire extinguisher nearby. Keep all products (but especially those that are flammable) away from flame, heat, or sparks.
  11. Do not use more of the product than you need. Follow label directions.
  12. Store used rags (especially those with flammable products on them) in a sealed, labeled container.
  13. Make sure lids are tightly sealed and that children cannot get them open.
  14. All products should be labeled clearly.
  15. NEVER transfer chemicals into other containers that were once filled with food or water.
  16. Do not wear soft contact lenses during work with pesticides and /or solvents.
  17. Make sure containers are carefully sealed when not in use and that the containers are kept dry. (Dry containers help prevent corrosion).

  18. Store gasoline away from flames, heat, or sparks in approved safe containers.
  19. After using chemicals, clean area thoroughly.
  20. Try to avoid products containing phosphates, chlorine bleach, sodium hypochlorite, EDTA and NTA.
  21. Buy products labeled "biodegradable".
  22. Instead of pesticides:
    -use natural predators like ladybugs
-add insect-repelling plants to your garden such as basil, chrysanthemums, mint, chives, and marigolds.
  23. Use mulch and compost for the health of your plants; thus decreasing the need for chemical fertilizers.
  24. Buy pesticide-free (organic) fruits and vegetables.
